Indonesia’s Cinema on the Rise in Cambodia

Audience enthusiasm in Cambodia toward Indonesian films has shown a positive trend in recent years. Based on data from Cambodia’s Department of Cinema and Cultural Diffusion, in 2025 Indonesian films ranked as the third most-screened foreign films in Cambodian cinemas, following Hollywood and local productions. In fact, approximately 18% of films screened in Cambodian cinemas originated from Indonesia, reflecting growing audience interest in Indonesian content. This growth is further supported by strong audience reception, indicating an appreciation not only for horror genres but also for the diversity of storytelling and the overall production quality of Indonesian films.

Project Overview

Indonesia on Screen, held on February 12, 2026 at Legend Cinema Olympia in Phnom Penh, was a cultural initiative by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Phnom Penh, featuring a special screening of Boundless Love. The event was designed as a strategic effort to enhance the visibility of Indonesian cinema in Cambodia while fostering cross-border collaboration within the creative industry.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia and organized in collaboration with Nanyang Bridge Media, the program was structured into two key segments. The first was an industry discussion forum that brought together film industry players to exchange insights on collaboration opportunities, content development, and market potential. The second was a public screening session, attended by a diverse audience including industry professionals, government representatives, and university students.

Solutions

  • Nanyang Bridge Media designed a curated industry discussion forum by bringing together relevant stakeholders with strategic roles. The forum focused on actionable discussions, aiming not only to build awareness but also to generate tangible collaboration opportunities beyond the event.

  • The event was packaged as a dual-format experience—combining an industry forum and a public screening—to reach a broader audience. The presence of participants from industry, government, and academia helped expand exposure while creating multi-layered engagement.

  • As a bridge between Indonesia and Cambodia, Nanyang Bridge Media managed end-to-end coordination, ensuring seamless communication among stakeholders and delivering an integrated execution aligned with international standards.

Results

The Indonesia on Screen event in Phnom Penh delivered strong outcomes as a strategic platform for both cultural showcase and industry engagement. By combining curated film screenings with meaningful dialogue, the initiative successfully elevated the visibility of Indonesian cinema in Cambodia while fostering deeper appreciation for its storytelling and cultural richness.

With over 250 attendees from across industry, government, and academia, the event extended beyond a conventional screening to function as a multi-stakeholder engagement platform. It not only strengthened cultural and diplomatic connections between Indonesia and Cambodia, but also generated tangible opportunities for collaboration in distribution, co-production, and knowledge exchange—reinforcing Indonesia’s growing presence in the regional and global film landscape.

Testimonials

“I really enjoy Indonesian films, and I even majored in the Indonesian language during college, which I have now completed. Most of the time, I like watching Indonesian horror movies, but I also enjoy other genres as well. I think Boundless Love is a very beautiful romantic story, with heartfelt storytelling and strong emotional depth that truly resonates with the audience.”
