When Imperial Pictures, the production team behind Assalamualaikum Beijing 2: Lost in Ningxia approached us, we knew this would be more than just another film project. It was a story rooted in emotional depth, and stunning landscapes, a perfect match for what we do best at Nanyang Bridge Media: bridging creative worlds between Indonesia and China.

With offices in both Jakarta and Beijing, we’ve long positioned ourselves as a strategic production partner for cross-border collaborations. For Lost in Ningxia, we proudly served as the fixer and official on-ground production support for the entire China-based shoot.

Project Background

This sequel to the beloved 2014 film Assalamualaikum Beijing brought a new layer of narrative, one that required authentic Chinese settings, especially from the beautiful and lesser-known Ningxia region. The vision was clear, to capture the heart of China while maintaining the soul of Indonesian storytelling.

Our role was to make that vision logistically possible and creatively seamless.

The Challenges We Faced

Producing a film in a foreign country always comes with challenges.
For this particular project, we encountered:

01

Navigating China’s film regulations

Securing filming permits is never a one-size-fits-all process. Each location came with its own administrative requirements, timelines, and negotiation protocols.

02

Finding the perfect locations

The director wanted a mix of romantic, cultural, and epic visuals, which meant scouting remote areas not commonly used for foreign productions.

03

Casting local extras who could truly support the film

One unexpected challenge was finding local background actors who not only fit the look and setting, but could also deliver natural, believable performances. We needed extras who could blend seamlessly with the story and understand direction, something that required both careful casting and on-site coaching.

04

Language and cultural differences

With the main production crew coming from Indonesia, we had to ensure there were no communication breakdowns between the teams, authorities, and locals.

05

A tight schedule

The entire shoot in China was planned over the span of one month. Every minute counted, and our planning had to be watertight.

How We Made It Work

At Nanyang Bridge Media, we believe strong networks and deep cultural understanding are the key to successful international production.
Here’s how we brought Lost in Ningxia to life:

01

Permits and Permissions

We handled all government approvals, making sure every location was cleared in time. Our long-standing relationships with local authorities helped streamline the process.

02

Location Scouting

From historical villages to the majestic desert dunes of Ningxia, we scouted, pitched, and secured breathtaking locations that became visual highlights in the film.

03

Local Crew & Casting

We assembled a trusted network of Chinese crew members, actors, and on-site specialists who worked side-by-side with the Indonesian team — efficiently and respectfully.

04

Full Production Logistics

We managed all on-ground needs: transportation, accommodation, catering, equipment rental, prop sourcing, and even interpreters to ensure everything flowed smoothly.

The Result

Thanks to our team’s preparation and dedication, the filming wrapped up on schedule and without major issues. More importantly, the final footage captured the stunning spirit of Ningxia, blending Indonesia’s heartfelt storytelling with China’s breathtaking scenery.

We’re proud to say that Assalamualaikum Beijing 2: Lost in Ningxia didn’t just succeed as a film, it succeeded as a cross-cultural collaboration. The reviews praising its visuals and authenticity validate the effort, trust, and synergy built between the two countries.
