Qionghai, August 19, 2025 – Scorching heat, high humidity, sudden heavy rainfall, and corrosive environments are hallmarks of tropical regions. These extreme conditions have turned Hainan into a “natural laboratory” for the global automotive industry to test vehicle durability.
At an automotive testing facility in Hainan, ASEAN media partners had the opportunity to experience first-hand what it’s like to put vehicles through tracks designed to replicate real-world challenges. From gravel roads to steep inclines that push cars to their limits, each test track offered a vivid picture of the obstacles vehicles must overcome before entering tropical markets.
The facility goes beyond conventional road testing, accommodating a wide range of extreme scenarios—from weather endurance assessments and corrosion tests caused by high humidity, to reliability trials under harsh environmental stress. Today, Hainan stands among the world’s top three tropical vehicle testing centers, alongside Florida in the United States and South Africa, cementing its strategic role in global automotive development.
The similarity of climate conditions with ASEAN countries has also opened the door to stronger research and technology collaboration. Journalists and media professionals who visited the facility noted significant opportunities for cooperation between China and Southeast Asia, particularly in the field of electric and new energy vehicles.
That vision is shared by the hosts. “With the growing export of vehicles to Southeast Asia, we aim to expand this facility beyond domestic needs and build it into an internationally recognized tropical testing hub,” said Wang Xuanfeng, Deputy General Manager of Hainan Tropical Automotive Test Co., Ltd.
For automakers, Hainan is more than just a proving ground. The island represents a real-world benchmark where vehicle endurance and reliability are put to the test before reaching the roads of tropical Asia.
