The Indonesian film industry proudly unveils a new creation that brings forth a story full of emotion, love, and cross-cultural friendship. This time, Indonesian cinema presents the sequel to the widely popular film from a few years ago, Assalamualaikum Beijing. Titled Assalamualaikum Beijing 2: Lost in Ningxia, the film officially held its soft launch on 20th May 2025 at CGV Grand Indonesia, Jakarta, in an event attended by lead actors, filmmakers, and members of the press.
Adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by renowned author Asma Nadia, this film offers a standalone narrative from its predecessor. Despite being labeled a “sequel,” Assalamualaikum Beijing 2: Lost in Ningxia does not follow the same storyline as the first film. Instead, it offers a fresh yet familiar tale that is sure to captivate both fans of the original and new audiences alike.
High Enthusiasm at the Soft Launch

The warm and lively launch event featured a press conference with the main cast. Yasmin Napper and Baskara Mahendra, who take on the leading roles, shared their personal experiences during filming in China.
The production took place over the course of a month in two key locations: Ningxia and Xi’an, both known for their historical and cultural richness. Baskara Mahendra expressed his awe at the stunning landscapes and local traditions, noting how clean, orderly, and culturally rich the environment was—so much so that he expressed a desire to return.
Yasmin Napper echoed this sentiment, describing how much she enjoyed her time on set, especially in Ningxia, which she found visually breathtaking. She shared how the experience deepened her understanding of her character and broadened her perspective.
Exotic Filming Locations in Ningxia and Xi’an

As highlighted by the lead actors, one of the film’s most striking features is its visual backdrop. Ningxia, the main filming site, is an autonomous region in China with the largest Muslim population, predominantly of the Hui ethnic group. Its unique local culture, distinctive architecture, and natural landscapes—deserts and mountains—create an authentic and powerful cinematic experience.
Xi’an, another key location, is one of China’s oldest cities and was the starting point of the historic Silk Road. It also houses some of China’s oldest Islamic heritage sites, such as the Great Mosque of Xi’an. Together, these settings enrich the film’s narrative and offer a visual palette rarely seen in Indonesian films.
About Assalamualaikum Beijing 2: Lost in Ningxia

More than just a love story, Assalamualaikum Beijing 2: Lost in Ningxia is a journey in search of meaning, highlighting themes of tolerance, sacrifice, sincerity, and the courage to seek the truth.
Through the character Aisha (played by Yasmin Napper), audiences are taken on an emotional journey of a woman searching for spiritual grounding. Mo, played by Baskara Mahendra, is an Indonesian-Chinese man who has long lived in China. He becomes Aisha’s companion as she searches for the mysteriously missing Arif.
This journey evolves into a spiritual awakening for Aisha, who recently converted to Islam out of love for Arif, a Muslim man. The film offers not only entertainment but also inspiration and introspection.
