9 International Movies Filmed in Indonesia

Have you ever been amazed by the filming location chosen by world-class producers and directors? Not only because of the stunning panorama, the culture as well as the beauty in the surrounding environment also become a major aspect in a movie.

There are international movies that filmed in Indonesia. As we know, Indonesia lies in south-east Asia across the equator and comprises more than 17,500 islands across an extensive archipelago and some 60% of the country is forested which also one of the most bio-diverse places in the world. Some areas that have unique and outstanding beauty have succeeded in making some of the film producers choose Indonesia as a perfect shooting location, either entirely shot in the country or with some scenes only.

So, which locations that have been selected for international movies in Indonesia?

Anaconda : The Hunt of Blood Orchid (2004) – Mangrove Forest, Borneo

 

The Anaconda movie tells the story of a group of people who are on journey looking for rare orchids, then accidentally meet a giant Anaconda snake. The film which is released in 2004 takes Borneo, Kalimantan as a film background with various scenes down the forest and river. In the film you can see the Kalimantan forest ecosystem which is still well preserved.


King Kong (2005) – Mursalah Island, North Sumatra Province

It tells about a giant King Kong who survived by fighting with his enemies. Living on a mysterious island that took shooting location on Mursala Island, South Tapanuli, North Sumatra made him isolated from the outside world.

Eat, Pray, Love (2010) – Ubud Village, Bali Province

 

The international world is getting to know Indonesia because of the Eat, Pray, Love movie starring by Julia Roberts in 2010. From the beginning, the process of filming this Hollywood movie involved many Balinese people, thereby increasing Bali name as an international tourist destination.


Alex Cross (2012) – Nusa Lembangan Island & Karangasem Regency

 

Alex Cross is about Dr. Alex Cross (Tyler Perry) who is an expert in field of investigation of premeditated murder cases in Detroit police, United States.The film which was directed by also the Mummy and XXX film maker, chosed Karangasem and Nusa Lembangan in Bali Island as the shooting location.


Savages (2012) – Moyo Island, West Nusa Tenggara Province

 

Moyo island is about 2,5 km from Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara Province. Moyo Island was chosen to be the shooting location of the 2012 Savages film, starring famous Hollywood action movie stars like John Travolta and Salma Hayek.


Java Heat (2013) – Magelang, Jogja & Borobudur Temple

 

The next international movies filmed in Indonesia is the Jave Heat which was directed by Conor Allyn. The movie selected Magelang and Jogja for the background of the film. Among them are the Borobudur Temple, several streets and restaurants around Magelang & Jogja.


After The Dark (2013) – Jakarta, Belitung, Sumatra, Mount Bromo & Prambanan Temple

 

After The Dark released in 2013 tells about 20 students from all over the world who were invited to see the world after being hit by a nuclear bomb. This movie starred Bonnie Wright, James D’Arcy, Freddie Stroma, Daryl Sabara, Sophie Lowe, Rhys Wakefield, Indonesian artist Cinta Laura also played in this John Huddles film.


The Salt of The Earth (2014) – Yalimo Regency, Papua Province

 

The Salt of The Earth 2014 is a documentary film you must watch. In this film you can see how a Sebastiao Salgado (a Brazilian journalist and photographer) at that time covered the life of Yali people (a Papua Tribe). How natural and human resources are exploited to benefit the global economic market.


Blackhat (2015) – Jakarta

 

If you are the fans of The Avengers movie, of course you are already familiar with the Thor actor, right? Yep, Chris Hemsworth has also visited Jakarta for Blackhat movie in 2015. The movie which was directed by Michael Mann chosed several iconic locations in Indonesia’s capital area, such as Soekarno Hatta Airport, Sunda Kelapa Harbor, Tanah Abang, and Lapangan Banteng as the location for this film.
